While Knuckles cries out for help and then falls asleep, Athair tells Merlin to call forth the "Chosen One." Merlin casts a spell, and Tails awakens as Turbo Tails. Can Sonic aid in their escape without blowing his cover? Plus, surprising unexpected revelations about Robotnik and Tails. And what's with all the missing Overlanders?

To the Brink

He refuses to listen and beats Tails into submission. Suddenly, Knuckles hears the voice of Julie-Su calling for him and teleports away. Merlin, concerned that Tails did not even attempt to defend himself, rushes to his nephew's side. Athair is certain that Turbo Tails should have been powerful enough to overcome Chaos Knuckles and decides to probe Tails' mind for answers. He finds that the "Tails" lying before them is actually not the real Tails, but rather a magical doppelgänger. Merlin insists they must find the real Tails, but Athair cautions that there may not be a real Tails at all. He instead proposes they simply return the fake Tails to his regular life while they search for answers.

Issue #98

Price: $1.99 + tax (CA $2.39 + tax)
Release Date: June 13, 2001

Archie Sonic the Hedgehog #98 is an adaptation of the beginning of the video game Sonic Adventure 2 and includes the first appearance of Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat in the comics.

"Sonic Adventure 2"
The story begins with Dr. Eggman finding a secret journal written by his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, inside a high-tech prison cell. The journal details the existence of a secret weapon and sets the stage for the backstory. The issue then chronicles the events that unfold in Station Square and onboard the Space Colony ARK. A week before the main events, Shadow the Hedgehog steals a Chaos Emerald from a bank in Station Square, easily destroying a Silver Sonic II robot that tries to stop him. A G.U.N. detective obtains security footage of the robbery. The President mistakes Shadow for Sonic the Hedgehog and hires Rouge the Bat to find the Chaos Emerald. A team of G.U.N. operatives, led by Hugo Brass, is dispatched to capture Sonic. Though Sonic outmatches the team, they manage to subdue him with an electric net. While being transported by helicopter, Sonic escapes and evades G.U.N. forces by using a piece of the helicopter as a makeshift board to ride into the city.

"As the Shadow Awakes"
In a flashback, Professor Gerald Robotnik is onboard the Space Colony ARK, finalizing his "Project: Shadow"—an ultimate life form intended for medical research to cure his granddaughter, Maria. A military craft from Station Square approaches the ARK to seize the project for military use. During the invasion, Maria is shot and killed while helping Shadow escape in a pod. A grieving Gerald is imprisoned on Prison Island. He plots his revenge, planting a hidden chip with his plans and programming Shadow to carry out his dark wishes upon his eventual death. Though Gerald is executed by the military, his hidden chip is never found. The issue ends with Shadow's pod washing ashore, its occupant missing.

What Comes Around Goes Around
On board the Dark Legion's Battle Cruiser, Dimitri is angrily barking orders at his men as the ship experiences turbulence. The troops inform their leader that they were hit by a massive shock wave that they could not detect. They find that the shock must have come from the Floating Island, which is directly behind them. Finding a transmission of Chaos Knuckles fighting Turbo Tails and then suddenly vanishing, Dimitri decides that they need to head for the Floating Island post-haste. Knuckles arrives at the Dark Legion Complex base on the Floating Island, having teleported there after hearing Julie-Su's voice. He wanders inside to find her being captured by the Dark Legion... and himself coming to rescue her. Knuckles starts to intervene when the ghost of his ancestor, Hawking, appears to stop him. Hawking explains that Knuckles can now teleport through time and space, and takes Knuckles to his dead body in Haven as an example. He then tells Knuckles that both of them are actually "evolving", despite his physical body being dead. Hawking vanishes mysteriously while Knuckles ponders why he is not in constant pain and agony anymore. The Dark Legion approaches the island, their sensors detecting massive amounts of energy radiating from Haven. Knuckles' energy wave disappears suddenly. Dimitri tells Lien-Da to fetch Julie-Su when the energy reading suddenly disappears. Knuckles appears in the ship behind them, demanding answers.

Reunion
Sonic and Princess Sally reunite for the first time since Sonic was divested of his knighthood, but it's not quite what the heroic hedgehog had in mind. Ironically, it all takes place in that mechanized metropolis of Robotropolis, but that's not the most shocking surprise: the bittersweet reunion is made even more so by the loss of one of Knothole's own.

Welcome to the Dark Side
Plus: another thrilling Knuckles back-up story by Ken Penders! The recent exploits and intrigue of Knuckles collide in one combustible story, as Knuckles faces off against Dmitri and the Dark Legion. The fact of literally everyone on Mobius hangs in the balance, not to mention Knuckles' family and friends, helplessly trapped in another zone.
